Celebrate The Holiday Season At Capella Washington D.C.

Weihnachtskugeln

I can’t believe our very first Holiday Season at Capella Washington, D.C. is here!  It has been such an incredible experience working with all of my team members to create a new foundation that we can look back on for many years to come.  One of the most important concepts we all keep in mind when working on Holiday specials, promotions, and dining experiences is keeping the guest at the center of everything we do.  For example, during the creation of The Grill Room’s Thanksgiving dinner & brunch menu, Chef Jakob Esko made sure to tailor each holiday dish to showcase traditional and modern fare that we all love, while also incorporating dishes of his own creation infused with European and New American flavors and influences.  Every piece of our holiday offerings brings a special experience for the guest, giving them a sense of home and comfort.  The following are my Insider favorites just for you this Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve:

Thanksgiving & Black Friday:

  • Cozy up by the fireplace with your family on Thanksgiving in the comforts of your own Presidential Suite dining room and enjoy a symbolic tableside cutting of the Thanksgiving Turkey!  Even the table décor is dressing up for the event- courtesy of quintessential American Fashion Designer, Ralph Lauren.  Details
  • Take advantage of Black Friday shopping in Georgetown then relax for brunch at The Grill Room where you can look forward to a scrumptious Thanksgiving Eggs Benedict.  While enjoying your brunch and cocktails, Capella Washington D.C. will be offering complimentary gift-wrapping services to relieve some holiday stress! Experience Capital Bikeshare DC

Capital Bikeshare DC

One of my favorite new activities in Georgetown is bike riding!  Capital Bikeshare has over 200 bike stations across DC, Arlington, Alexandria, VA and Montgomery County, MD, making it easier than ever to get around the city.  My first bike ride came about after an extremely long day at work, I had to find a way to let loose!  I walked around the corner of Capella Washington D.C. and rented a shiny red bike at $7.00 for 24 hours.  Afterwards, I realized I could have rented a bike for 3 days for just $15.00!  I headed down the hill to the Washington Harbour and Potomac River.  The fall weather was perfect, and all around me were beautiful sites of joyful couples, friends relaxing in the lush green grass, children walking their dogs, and young professionals enjoying cocktails and dinner by the water.

Capital Bikeshare DCMy bike ride continued back up into the heart of Georgetown.  I remembered I wanted to check out a new designer consignment shop on Wisconsin Avenue.  0.2 miles later I arrived at Ella-Rue and picked up a gorgeous bracelet on sale for $18.00!  Back on the road, I biked passed more fashionable haunts including Hu’s Wear, Cusp and Hugo Boss.  I also discovered some great new restaurants, like the brand new El Centro by Chef Richard Sandoval, featuring some of the best Mexican comfort food and Tequila in the city.

After journeying around M street and Wisconsin shopping and dining district I felt the need for speed.  I took a right onto Rock Creek Park Trail, one of the best places to hike and bike in the Washington, DC area.  It was so refreshing having the opportunity to explore the beauty of nature and escape the city life for a while.  The bike by the way was amazing and I was pleasantly surprised how well it is designed, with many built-in safety mechanisms.

Fortunately there happens to be a bikeshare station right next to my house, so after I returned from the trail, I simply parked the bike at the station and walked my way home.  The next morning I still had time left on the 24 hour rental, so I decided to bike to work!  I have to say it was a wonderful way to start the busy day.

I can’t wait for you to experience Capital Bikeshare during your visit it is an amazing way to experience the city.  Be sure to ask your Capella Washington, D.C. Personal Assistant where the nearest station is located!

The Older Fashioned Cocktail At The Rye Bar

The Rye Bar

Are you a fan of Rye Whiskey cocktails?  I have a confession:  I wasn’t always.  But that has all changed!  Capella Washington, D.C., Georgetown’s The Rye Bar has helped to change my opinion by introducing me to a series of specialty rye cocktails, each prepared with one of their featured Rye Whiskey’s and each with its own flavor profile.

The Rye Bar

The Older Fashioned Cocktail recipe features a striking and smooth Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey, which has a slightly spicy, yet lighter rye flavor and a long luxurious finish.  This sophisticated Rye combined with the dense and velvety Pedro Hidalgo is truly an explosion of flavor.   The Pedro has hints of raisins, figs and honey which work perfectly with the addition of muddled Luxardo Cherries and oranges.  I was surprised by the complexity of flavors and really enjoyed the sophistication of the drink.

I decided to let you in on the secret of this cocktail.  In fact, I joined forces with staff from The Rye Bar to create a video tutorial with all the steps needed to create the Older Fashioned Cocktail.  Let me know what you think on Twitter!  Tweet me @CapellaDC #TheRyeBar.

Recipe:
1 shot Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey
½ ounce Lustau Pedro Ximenez
2 Luxardo Cherries
2 Oranges Slices

The Washington Harbour Ice Rink

Washington Harbour Ice Rink

Do you recall your last ice skating adventure?  Well, as the cold winter approaches in Washington D.C., the Washington Harbour in Georgetown has unveiled its newest attraction: the Washington Harbour ice rink, D.C.’s largest ice rink measuring at 11,800 square feet!  This is something I am very excited about and already have a visit planned with friends.

The gorgeous ice rink is located just one block away from Capella Washington, D.C., Georgetown and looks over the historic Potomac River.  I cannot think of a better way to embrace the icy temperatures, bundling up in your favorite winter coat and hat.  The rink, which opened in November, will be available through March and has both daytime and nighttime hours.

To ring-in the Holidays, the Washington Harbour ice rink recently celebrated “Winter on the Water,” a new celebration held this past Saturday, December 1st. The event featured strolling ice skating entertainers, skating performances, choral singers, a St. Lucia parade, and artistic lighting effects.  Guests also indulged in exceptional foods and beverages prepared and served outdoors by the top restaurants located in the Harbour waterfront.

Hopefully you will have an opportunity to visit the rink.  And, if you are staying with Capella Washington, D.C., Georgetown then your Personal Assistants can help organize your excursion!

A Sneak Peek Of Capella Georgetown

IMG_3596

Recently I had the opportunity to sit in on a design meeting for the upcoming Capella Georgetown in Washington, DC.  This 48 room jewel will not be lacking in amenities.  I am particularly excited about the rooftop pool (complete with Cabanas) and the spa!  We are still very early in the process (with the hotel scheduled to open in January 2013), but it was extremely interesting to catch glimpses of what goes into the planning and to preview this unique property.

World class interior designer, Peter Silling of Peter Silling & Associates, presented his design to Capella Hotels Chairman & CEO Horst Schulze.  I was delighted to meet Mr. Silling who is also the mastermind behind our Capella property in Düsseldorf, Germany, Breidenbacher Hof.

Clearly, both gentlemen were excited about the development, evidenced in their bilingual, energetic exchange.  Mr. Schulze and Mr. Silling slipped between English and German (their native language), as they worked to find a balance between the aesthetic and functionality.  The discussion ran the gamut between the placement of electrical sockets (not glamorous) to the type of marble to be used in the bathrooms (very glamorous).

In addition to the above shots of Mr. Silling and Mr. Schulze brainstorming and reviewing the finished samples, I was able to get a sneak peek of some early renderings:

As the construction progresses I plan to introduce you to a few more behind the scenes photos from the Capella Georgetown property.  Hopefully these images have you looking forward to the project as much as I am!
