Singapore really comes to life during the festive season – with dawn-to-dusk feasting, dusk-to-dawn parties, and lots of shopping and gatherings in between.  That said, the festive frenzy sometimes sends me (and my skin) into over-drive.

This past month, back-to-back late nights were starting to take their toll.  So, with the party season coming up, I really needed a beauty reboot.  Fortunately, Auriga Spa’s Regional Director of Spa Alsu Abdulina read my mind, and invited me for a restorative experience.

The moment I stepped into Auriga Spa, I felt removed from the fluster of the world.  Shrugging off my worries and slipping into my spa robe, I relaxed in the cinnamon-infused steam room, cooled myself down with the ice fountain, and then stilled my mind and body with the warm massaging jets of the vitality pool.  I was teleported to a secret universe where time stood still.

Since city life causes us to feel estranged from nature and our bodies, Auriga Spa’s treatments are designed to put us in tune with nature again.  The spa’s signature moon phase treatments are uniquely synced with the lunar cycle, and tap into its restorative energies.  My spa day happened to correspond with the new moon, so I was offered the New Moon Treatment for festive detoxification and renewal.

Unhurriedly, my therapist began by anointing and massaging my foot with a clarifying blend of juniper, rosemary and fennel oil.  Then, she treated me to an aromatic seaweed and eucalyptus salt scrub.  After I rinsed off the salt, dead skin cells and impurities, she slathered on a purifying seaweed mud wrap to purge out toxins.

While being cocooned in this warm soporific wrap, my face was thoroughly cleansed and massaged with an organic honey jasmine mask that smelled good enough to eat.  And to end the treatment on a high note, I enjoyed a soothing body and scalp massage.  My therapist had an uncanny knack for finding and easing every ache in my body so that I emerged from this treatment feeling as good as new.

To retain my post-spa glow for as long as possible, I quickly caught up with Regional Spa Director Alsu for her wellness tips.  Here are her four secrets to youth and beauty:

#1 Eat Your Way To Glowing Skin

True beauty comes from within, so the first step to inner radiance is eating right.  Cut down on sugar, which cause glycation and damages the collagen and elastin in your skin.  Also, consume carbohydrates moderately, especially refined carbohydrates which are depleted of nutrients.

Instead, trade these for superfoods such as antioxidant-packed goji berries and acai berries, nutrient-dense avocado and omega-3 rich chia seed.

#2 Nature Is The Best Healing Balm

Don’t overwhelm your skin – many modern skincare products contain harsh and strong ingredients that may deliver flash results, but also tend to over-stimulate your skin.  This causes inflammation and premature ageing over time.

Detox Day at the Spa Breidenbacher Hof

Recently I have been feeling slightly sluggish.  I mentioned this to one of the Personal Assistants here at Breidenbacher Hof, A Capella Hotel and fortunately she had the perfect answer:  A Detox Day at The Spa!  I couldn’t agree more and quickly booked myself in for some pampering.

I started my day early, and after a fantastic breakfast with fresh fruit and a cup of green tea,  I changed into a fluffy bath robe and slippers from the hotel and headed to the Schnitzler Beauty Lounge at the Breidenbacher Hof. 

Our Personal Assistant booked me a Metall – Transmutation.  This is an all around detoxing body treatment. The whole treatment lasts about 4.5 hours and is especially relaxing experience. The products used are from St.Barths line of cosmetic. The treatment really addresses everything from head-to-toe.  Starting with a cleansing facial, moving onto a soothing massage and followed by an indulgent manicure/pedicure.

I loved that all the treatment rooms are designed to reflect the four elements (earth, air, fire and water). I was in the fire cabin. Perfectly matched to my mood!

1) Eat Your Asparagus
Asparangus is loaded with nutrients. It is a very good source of fiber, folate, vitamins A, C, E and K, as well as chromium,  a trace mineral that enhances the ability of insulin to transport glucose from the bloodstream into the cells.
2) Partake In A Sauna Experience
My spa therapist recommended the sauna and told me all about the amazing benefits.  Saunas can cleanse your skin,  promote better circulation and strengthen your immune system.  They also help with killing germs!
3) Don’t Forget Water
This is always shows up on detoxing lists and for good reason!  The body is made up of 70 per cent water and needs around 6 to 8 glasses a day to keep it hydrated and help flush out toxins.

Vor Kurzem fühlte ich mich ein wenig träge. Als ich dies einem Personal Assistant im Breidenbacher Hof, a Capella Hotel, mitteilte hatte er die perfekte Lösung für mich parat: Eine Entgiftungskur im Spa! Eine großartige Idee. Die PA’s haben /hatten alles für mich gebucht und ich musste nur meinem Termin entgegen fiebern.
Ich starte meinen Tag gerne früh und kam in den Genuss eines fantastischen Frühstücks mit frischem Obst und einer Tasse grünem Tee. Anschließend zog ich den hauseigenen flauschigen Bademantel und die Hausschuhe an und begab mich in die Schitzler Beauty Lounge im Breidenbacher Hof.
Mein Personal Assistant buchte mir eine Metall – Transmutation, eine Ganzkörper Entgiftungskur, die 4 Stunden andauert. Die verwendeten Produkte stammen aus der Kosmetiklinie St.Barth und verwöhnen einen von Kopf bis Fuß. Die Behandlung begann mit einem Gesichtspeeling, das in eine beruhigenden Massage führte. Abgerundet wurde das Ganze mit einer professionellen Pediküre/Maniküre.

Summer Skin – Ready, Set, Glow!

One of the most beautiful ‘souvenirs’ of a beach vacation is a rich golden tan. However, having read extensively about the ageing effects of prolonged sun exposure, I have my reservations about soaking in the sun.

Fortunately, Shanti Krisna, Director of Auriga Spa here at Capella Singapore, introduced me to a safe and effortless way to get my glow on and achieve the perfect summer skin. Using top-quality organic products, Auriga Spa’s Healthy Glow Self Tan treatment replicates the resplendent glow of sun-kissed skin, minus the skin damage from ultraviolet rays!

This fuss-free 60-minute treatment began with an uplifting citrusy body scrub. Formulated with aloe, sage and naturals oils, it gently sloughed off dead skin cell for satin smooth skin. It also subtly tightened my skin, revved up microcirculation and reduced the appearance of cellulite!

After my skin had been polished to perfection, my therapist slathered on an even layer of premium plant-based self-tan cream. #1 Get Under Cover

The sun is the No. 1 culprit of premature ageing. So never leave home without a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. You should look for a sunscreen with at least SPF30 PA+++, and apply it at least 20 minutes before sun exposure to allow the product to penetrate and protect your skin optimally.

#2 Scalp Help

Ultraviolet rays can also harm your scalp and hair. This causes sunburned scalp, dehydrated tresses, as well as hair loss. So invest in a sunscreen formulated for your hair and scalp, or wear a sunhat.

#3 Sunburn SOS

If you are suffering from sunburn, an aloe vera gel can help to calm and rehydrate your skin for accelerated recovery. In the meantime, keep your skincare and makeup regime simple. Avoid exfoliating products that will injure sunburned skin, as well as products with synthetic fragrances that may cause irritation.

#4 Hair Tip

Seawater and chlorinated swimming pool water strips hair of its moisture. So before diving in, wet your hair and apply a leave-in conditioner or olive oil to protect it from damage.

#5 Balancing Act

We all love summer. However, hot and humid weather can increase sebum protection while dehydrating your skin. Switch from a heavy moisturising cream to a lightweight gel-based moisturiser to prevent T-zone shine, clogged pores and acne. A facial blotter and hydrating mist can also help to keep skin matte and dewy during the day!

Discover Water Adventures On Sentosa Island

I love driving onto to Sentosa Island on my way to Capella Singapore each day.  Sentosa may only be a twenty minute drive from downtown Singapore, but it is an escape unto itself.  What I love most about Sentosa is being amidst an ocean of sapphire, sparkling in the brilliant sunlight.  Spread across just 500 hectares (5 square kilometres) of lush greenery, Sentosa offers stunning coastlines and countless water-themed attractions.  Here are my top four recommendations for wonderful water escapades on the island.

#1 Find Your Dream Beach

Summer is synonymous with the beach, and Sentosa boasts three stunning beaches.  Palawan, Siloso and Tanjong Beach are just mere minutes apart, but take a closer look and you’ll discover their rich and distinct personalities.

For family fun, make a beeline for Palawan Beach. The Port of Lost Wonders will enrapture the little ones with a water play area and themed islets. This sunny haven also features a suspension bridge leading to Asia’s closest point to the Equator, so you can literally ‘journey to the centre of the Earth’ together!

Siloso Beach has a decidedly more hippie vibe, with themed bars, beach volleyball games and an outdoor whirlpool bath lining the golden strip of sand. Come nightfall, it also transforms into a party haven, fuelled by beautiful beachgoers, thumping clubs, and regular guest DJ performances.

If you’re looking for an under-the-radar beach, however, Tanjong Beach will fit the bill. By far the quietest of the three, it offers the weary traveller a few peaceful moments away from the world. Skip the crowd, curl up with your favourite novel, pack a picnic with your partner and find a nice piece of paradise to call your own.

Sentosa is also home to one of the world’s largest oceanariums, so relive your Steven Spielberg fantasies by observing sharks, gigantic manta rays and exotic fish.

If you’re looking for a more personal adventure than that, you may also dive with dolphins at Dolphin Island or snorkel with 20,000 colourful reef fish and rays. Intrepid gourmands should also make a mandatory stop at Ocean Restaurant by Cat Cora, an underwater dining destination. Helmed by a celebrity chef, this restaurant located within the S.E.A. Aquarium serves up delicious smoked eel and sous vide salmon with first-class view of more than 100,000 marine animals through its giant glass window.

#3 Ride a Wave

Looking for some surf? Adrenaline junkies will love flowboarding at the Wave House. Get some heart-pumping action riding a wave, and then chill out to live music, enjoy some gourmet pizza, or knock back a few artisan beers at the alfresco beach bars. It’s the best way to let off some steam and decompress for the weekend.

After all that action and excitement, Auriga spa at Capella Singapore is the best place to unwind. A Visit To Auriga Spa At Capella Marigot Bay

As the newest member of the Capella Hotels family, there is so much of Saint Lucia and Capella that I am excited to share with you!  I thought it would be fun to start with one of my favorite destinations, Auriga spa at Capella Marigot Bay Resort and Marina.  It has become an immediate favorite spot for guests and it is easy to see why.

When I came in with sunburnt skin, they helped me choose the right treatment for me and tailored it to help heal my burn. They even sent me home with some cooling aloe and mint gel and invaluable advice on how to prevent future sunburns.  I was so thankful to have their guidance and care!

spa11Once I’d experienced the hot tub, steam room and sauna, my therapist treated me to the perfect massage. Free of all the tension that had built up in my muscles, I felt better than I had in a long time. Mental, spiritual and physical wellness is a primary focus of the Auriga spa philosophy and I definitely felt that after my treatment.

I also went home with a great tip from the therapists that I want to share with you now, especially with summer coming up! We know Aloe Vera gel is an amazing after-sun treatment for your skin, but you can take it to the next level by keeping it in the refrigerator. The innate therapeutic and conditioning properties of the Aloe will get to work healing your skin while the cool temperature of the gel will draw heat out of your skin providing you with instant relief.
