The countdown to the Grand Opening of Capella Marigot Bay Resort and Marina has begun!  Over the last few months, I have been very fortunate to witness the improvements to the property as it has morphed into an amazing Capella Hotel and Resort.  Every Monday, I walk around the property with my camera and capture each transformative moment.  From the laying down of the tiles at the poolside to the construction of the intimate Rum Cave, I’ve found myself in love with the detailed changes taking place.

There is so much that is new and exciting.  What was known as the simple Dinghy Dock has been transformed into the much talked about Rum Cave.  This beautiful space near the water’s edge will house some of the most creative mixology classes on the island.  What interested me most about the Rum Cave was the idea of being able to carefully concoct my very own rum cocktail and return some time later to find that it had been stored with a personalized label.  I am sure guests will be just as blown away by this unique idea as I am!

Another transformation has taken place in the former Zen Garden, which is now the Auriga spa. This outdoor spa treatment centre will be the cornerstone of health and wellness at Capella Marigot Bay.  Already I can’t help but to close my eyes for a few minutes and imagine having an outdoor treatment under the rainforest canopy and hearing the birds chirping their sweet melody as background music.  I am so intrigued by the Auriga spa’s concept of creating treatments around the moon phases and how that perfectly ties into the rejuvenating concepts of The mind, body and spirit.  This will definitely be my secret hideaway when the hotel reopens!

My next favorite new location is The Grill at 14*61.  Named for Saint Lucia’s global coordinates, The Grill at 14*61 will present a show kitchen where the Food and Beverage team will be putting on live cooking demonstrations and culinary classes.  I can’t wait to take one of these classes with my mom, as I know the Chef has some amazing St Lucian inspired dishes planned. Guests will be able to travel to the local market in the city of Castries and have the opportunity to purchase some of the islands most delicious fruits and vegetables then use those items for the cooking class.  It will be amazing to put on my chef’s hat and learn more about how local cuisine is prepared.

Another spot that is sure to attract guests is the upper pool.  This area contains the newly developed Brut Bar. Brut, as you may know, is French and means cold or raw.  Making it the perfect name as everything from ceviche to sushi will be served here.  I notice the water jets coming off the edge of the pool which I imagine would be ideal  for some water therapy.   Next to the  main pool is a beautifully cascading infinity pool where lounge chairs are rooted.  Not only is this spot wonderful for lounging, it is also very convenient for parents with toddlers.  The area even includes its own waterfall!

There is no doubt in my mind that the Grand Opening of Capella Marigot Bay Resort and Marina will complement beautiful Marigot Bay and will be a must see destination!

A View From Capella Sochi

In my last post I shared details from the upcoming Capella Georgetown.  But working at our Corporate offices, I can assure you that this is only one of several exciting projects currently under way.  One such property is the upcoming Capella Sochi, which is scheduled to open in time for the 2014 Olympics in Russia.

In between one of his many trips, Fausto Barba, Vice President of Finance & Development, shared with me his impression of this unique location.

“I first visited the site in late October 2009.  We landed at midnight on a Friday, and took a taxicab through the mountains.  We made plans to see the site the next morning at first light.

The hotel is located near some of the sites for Olympic ski events and will be a true ski-in and ski-out resort.  In the summer the resort village will be home to a world-class equestrian center and several outdoor activities.  And  there will be an amazing spa!  Of course, at the time of our visit this was nothing more than a set of plans.

The next morning, when we finally had an opportunity to look out on the site, it took my breath away.  The views in every direction are spectacular.  It is the quintessential mountain village!”

At that point Fausto took out his phone and shared some of the images he had taken that day.  One was so beautiful, that I had to share it with you:

Are you a fan of the Winter Olympics?  What do you think of the view from the new Capella Sochi?

A Sneak Peek Of Capella Georgetown

Recently I had the opportunity to sit in on a design meeting for the upcoming Capella Georgetown in Washington, DC.  This 48 room jewel will not be lacking in amenities.  I am particularly excited about the rooftop pool (complete with Cabanas) and the spa!  We are still very early in the process (with the hotel scheduled to open in January 2013), but it was extremely interesting to catch glimpses of what goes into the planning and to preview this unique property.

World class interior designer, Peter Silling of Peter Silling & Associates, presented his design to Capella Hotels Chairman & CEO Horst Schulze.  I was delighted to meet Mr. Silling who is also the mastermind behind our Capella property in Düsseldorf, Germany, Breidenbacher Hof.

Clearly, both gentlemen were excited about the development, evidenced in their bilingual, energetic exchange.  Mr. Schulze and Mr. Silling slipped between English and German (their native language), as they worked to find a balance between the aesthetic and functionality.  The discussion ran the gamut between the placement of electrical sockets (not glamorous) to the type of marble to be used in the bathrooms (very glamorous).

In addition to the above shots of Mr. Silling and Mr. Schulze brainstorming and reviewing the finished samples, I was able to get a sneak peek of some early renderings:

As the construction progresses I plan to introduce you to a few more behind the scenes photos from the Capella Georgetown property.  Hopefully these images have you looking forward to the project as much as I am!
