Visiting Capella Ixtapa and Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo

Capella Ixtapa, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo

Capella Ixtapa is located in a unique and beautiful area of Guerrero, Mexico.  Blending into the lush green backdrop of the Sierra Madre mountain ranges, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo lies along a hilly tropical coastline and is surrounded by dozens of white sandy beaches.  I am fortunate to live in a paradise that blends two diverse destinations into one.  Ixtapa is a modern, master planned resort town with perfectly maintained landscaping, vanguard architectural design and services, a luxurious Marina with yachts from all parts of the world, exclusive residential areas, boutiques and two 18-hole, designer golf courses.  Meanwhile, Zihuatanejo is a charming traditional fishing village, rich in folklore and history and complete with its harbor, market, townsquare, beaches and main street.  Though the two towns have their differences in habitat and style, they share that same wonderful sense of Mexican hospitality.

Both of the towns and the hotel offer a myriad of opportunities to explore the area and enjoy its surroundings.  In this blog post I list some of my colleagues’ and my favorite activities in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo.  If you are interested in any, please send us an email, we’d be happy to organize the experience during your visit to Capella Ixtapa:

A visit to Petatlan, a town known for it’s gold market, church and typical Mexican street scene. You can learn more about Petatlan in our previous blog posts here and here.

Eco Tourism: Experience the eco-tourism in Ixtapa while biking, kayaking, snorkeling or visiting the wildlife refuge, El Refugio de Potosí.

A visit to Barra de Potosí: This small beachside village has endless fine-sand beaches and a large lagoon brimming with bird life.  You can swim, take boat trips, rent a kayak and paddle around the estuary or go horseback riding.

Golfing: Golf courses in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo are carved into some of the most stunning landscapes that you have seen, designed to seamlessly blend in with natural landscape.  Capella Ixtapa guests are granted access to the best area courses to enjoy during a golf vacation in Mexico.

Deep-Sea or Small Game Fishing Trips: Go deep-sea fishing with experienced and local captain and crew for Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado or Tuna.  While small-game fishing, you can reel in Bonita, Yellow Fin Tuna, Snapper, and many others.

Cook Your Own Catch: Bring your catch back to the hotel, and our Chef will prepare a delicious feast for you (you can even help the Chef prepare your lunch or dinner with a personalized cooking tutorial!).

Private Picnic on the Beach: Enjoy this lunch Oceanside listening to the sound of the waves crushing on the cliffs or in the privacy of your suite.

Swimming and Snorkeling at Ixtapa Island or Las Gatas beach: both beaches offer one of the best snorkeling experiences in the Pacific area.  The Ixtapa Island   (our General Manager’s favorite spot to swim and relax) has four different beaches to explore and enjoy, and Las Gatas Beach will enchant you with its white coral sand beach and crystalline water.

Sunset Cruise: Experience Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo from the Ocean, and enjoy the sunset with a grand view of the hotel zone of Ixtapa.

Shopping and City Tour: Take those postcard perfect pictures and shop for traditional Mexican artisan souvenirs.

Zihuatanejo Market (or a visit with our Chef): A small town market is a place where the sentiment of old Mexican tradition of “trade” still lives on, el Mercado is a place where farmers meet and sell their goods.  Experience the stalls full of colors, textures and smells where you’ll be able to buy some of the freshest fish, meat and produce.  You can accompany our Chef during his trip to the market and once you arrive back at the Hotel, you can join the Chef in the kitchen for cooking lessons using your purchases, and enjoy your creations in your private lunch set up overlooking the Pacific.

Swimming with Dolphins: A favorite activity with both children and adults; swim with dolphins and learn about these amazing mammals.

Horse Back Riding: Ride along the beach at Playa Larga or trot along picturesque countryside trails throughout our mountain ranch tour.

Canopy Tour: Enjoy a family adventure that provides just the right mix of fun, physical challenges and pure adrenaline rush.  There are different high ropes activities such as hanging and moving bridges, ladders, and zip lines up to 250 meters long and 30 meters high that allow you to fly through the trees.

Un Destino, Doble placer: Ixtapa – Zihuatanejo

Capella Ixtapa, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo

New Friendships At Capella Ixtapa

Friendships At Capella Ixtapa 2

Often we receive letters and hear stories from guests who have visited Capella Ixtapa and want to share some of their memorable experiences.  Previously I shared the story of guests and the guanabana fruit and today I have the story of new friendships at Capella Ixtapa.

Michael, his wife Jackie and their grandson stayed with us during the Valentine’s Day week.  The grandson, who was Italian-American kept his grandparents on their toes.  But that didn’t prevent the couple from their own vacationing!

In his letter, Michael wrote of two particular Capella Ixtapa employees who left quite an impression.  Margarita Olais and Karla Nunez “both provided exceptional service, but both went beyond exceptional to make our stay even more memorable.”  So how did these ladies make an impression?  “Margarita found a guitar for me to use in serenading my wife and others all week during those warm Ixtapa evenings.  [While] Karla practiced Italian with us all week to help us keep up with our three-year-old Italian-American grandson.”

It is so wonderful to read a letter like this from a guest, as it is a reminder of why we are here: to help create memorable experiences that will last a lifetime.  The letter also included the above photo and additional note, “The picture is one of friends.”  It is this sentence that I found particularly meaningful and I know brought a smile to both Margarita’s and Karla’s face.  Both ladies look forward to the next time their friends will visit Capella Ixtapa.

Fusion of Flavors: A Culinary Event At Capella Ixtapa

Fusion Of Flavors

There’s always something cooking at Capella Ixtapa!  This March, we are organizing a culinary event: Fusion of Flavors of Guerrero and Michoacan.  Capella Ixtapa’s Chef Alexander Branch and Chef Miguel Baltazar from Hotel Virrey de Mendoza from Morelia, Mexico, will be hosting a three-day gourmet event with cocktails, kitchen demonstrations, Chef’s Table, brunch, and other events.  I am excited already!

Fusion Of Flavors

Hotel Virrey de Mendoza is a very well known and popular place to go to in Morelia.  The area is well known for it’s rich cuisine, and Chef Alexander Branch believes Hotel Virrey de Mendoza is a perfect match for our culinary event.  “By bringing Chef Baltazar’s experience and rich traditional Michoacan cuisine to Capella Ixtapa, combined with the traditional dishes of our own Guerrero region, we will offer our guests a truly memorable experience,” says Chef Alexander.

And what will Chef Alexander be cooking?  “I am focusing on bringing the little-known treasures of Guerrero cuisine to a modern and contemporary light.  I will prepare old world recipes and give them a new twist, trying to make them a true culinary experience, combining the best from the traditional and contemporary cuisine.  A perfect example of this is our signature “Nejo” Tamal, which is a tamal done with corn ash.”  Needless to say, I am intrigued!

Chef Alexander went on to explain “The event is a great opportunity for the guests, Chef Baltazar, myself and both hotels to build a relationship with the common love of good food.  I am very excited and eager to start cooking and learning from what I am certain will be an amazing experience.”

I share his excitement and look forward to all the delights both chefs will prepare for us!  This three-day event, March 1-3, 2013, will be a true culinary experience, exploring the amazing flavors of Mexican cuisine from Guerrero and Morelia.  I hope you can join us!  For more information and reservations, please contact us at  +52.1.755.555.11.00 or send us an email to: fbsupervision.ixtapa@capellahotels.com.

Fusión de Sabores: Un evento culinario en Capella Ixtapa

Fusion Of Flavors

 Fusion Of Flavors

The Zihua Sail Fest

Zihua Sail Fest

One of the most popular sports in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo is sailing.  Every year, thousands of sailing aficionados come to enjoy and practice their favorite sport in the beautiful natural setting of Zihuatanejo.  The Zihua Sail Fest, which is celebrating its twelfth anniversary, has become one of my favorite events of the year.

In true spirit of a “rendezvous”, vessels start arriving in November from as far away as Alaska and the Caribbean and drop anchor until February to participate in what is becoming one of Mexico’s premier sailing events.

The Zihua Sail Fest is a five-day festival that combines fun and games, heart-felt volunteerism and an outpouring of international friendship.  The general mood of the event is light-hearted, but participants’ goals are pretty serious:  To raise funds for the education of Zihuatanejo’s disadvantaged children.

 Zihua Sail Fest

Sailboat and dinghy races, cocktail parties, concerts, live auctions, kids’ day, beach parties, chili cook-offs, regattas and school events are just some of the activities that highlight this gathering.  (In fact, Capella Ixtapa’s seafood chili recipe won the contest last year!)

Last year, bolstered by grants from Rotary International, materials donations from the city government, and the volunteer labor of dozens of parents, the event raised $474,000 pesos.  The money provided our community with a new kindergarten and primary school.  Projects funded by the last Zihua Sail Fest benefited five schools and more than 400 children.

This year the festival takes place from February 5th until February 10th.  Last year 102 vessels registered and we are hoping for even more this year!  If you are interested in partaking in this year’s events, please join me at Capella Ixtapa and your Personal Assistant will happily help in your planning.  For more information on the fundraiser & foundation visit PorLosNinos.com.
