Happy New Year!  I hope the year started wonderfully for you!  For me personally, the New Year is always a time to reflect on all the good things in my life, my achievements in the previous year, and plans to start new beginnings with fresh ideas.  I like to start off with good intentions to make positive changes in my life.  This year especially, I want to focus on wellness in all areas of my life.  In Baja there are many activities that promote wellness and I wanted to share three of my favorites with you.  I believe they are a great way to connect with nature, your body and your spirit and I plan to experience them as frequently as possible this year!

SUP Yoga:  I love SUP yoga, because it allows me to practice yoga in my favorite environment: the sea!  If you are not familiar with SUP yoga, it is yoga but done on a stand up paddle board (SUP) on the sea.  I love how it enhances the yoga experience and benefits, and really strengthens your core and balance.  You can partake SUP yoga classes at Medano beach in Cabo San Lucas (please check with your Personal Assistant on the dates, as they are organized as special events).  I also love to take an unplugged weekend in Los Barriles and attend SUP yoga classes with the locals.

Surfari Trips:  If you like safari, you need to try a Baja surfari; a surf trip around Baja, where you get to surf some of the best surf spots in Baja!  Surfaris provide a very unique opportunity to experience nature, the ocean, hidden bays and small villages—all while learning new surfing skills and spend quality time with friends or family.  I love surfaris in Baja, as you can join them any time of year – because we are surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez, there are always great surf breaks somewhere.

Spa Time:  for a complete restoration of body and health there is nothing like a visit to the spa.  At Capella Pedregal’s Auriga spa we have just launched the entirely new wellness program with wellness treatments and 1- to 3-day wellness packages based on moon phases.  One of my new favorite treatments is Harmonyum. Gabby, the therapist, who was trained exclusively on this treatment, explained that our body has the power to heal itself when we are in perfect harmony and it all starts in the spine, which connects and protects all the nerves in our body.  She explained that the Harmonyum method, which is based on curing with energy, works on the spinal column and the organs.  It transmits positive impulses to the body through the nervous system.  The experience is extremely relaxing, and you can feel the benefits throughout your body for days.  You will feel energized physically, mental and emotionally.

¡Feliz Año Nuevo! ¡Espero que el año haya iniciado maravillosamente para ustedes!  Para mí personalmente, el Año Nuevo es siempre una época para reflexionar sobre todas las cosas buenas en mi vida, mis logros en el año que pasó, y el momento para planear nuevos inicios con nuevas ideas.  Me gusta siempre iniciar con buenas intenciones y realizar cambios positivos en mi vida.  Este año en específico, me estoy enfocando en tener salud y bienestar en todos los aspectos de mi vida.  En la Baja tenemos muchas actividades que promueven un estilo de vida de bienestar y quería compartir con ustedes tres de mis favoritas.  Pienso que son una excelente forma de conectar con la naturaleza, tu espíritu y tu cuerpo y planeo experimentarlas tan frecuentemente como me sea posible durante este año.

SUP Yoga:  Me encanta el Yoga en SUP, ya que me permite practicar yoga en mi medio ambiente favorito: ¡el mar!  Si no estás familiarizado con el SUP Yoga, es un yoga que se practica sobre una tabla SUP en el mar.  Me encanta como aumenta la experiencia y beneficios del yoga, y de verdad sientes como tu núcleo se vuelve más fuerte y balanceado.  Puedes tomar clases de SUP Yoga en la playa de El Médano en Cabo San Lucas (por favor checa con tu Asistente Personal tus fechas, ya que se organizan como eventos especiales).  También me encanta tomar un fin de semana “desconectada” en Los Barriles e ir a clases de SUP Yoga ahí con los locales.

Viaje Surfari: Si te gustan los safaris, necesitas probar el Baja Surfari;  un viaje de surf a lo largo de la Baja, donde tendrás la oportunidad de surfear los mejores sitios en la Baja!  Los Surfaris te dan una oportunidad única para experimentar el entorno natural, el océano, bahías ocultas y pequeños pueblos –todo mientras disfrutas del surf y el tiempo de calidad con familiares y/o amigos.  Me encantan los surfaris en la Baja, ya que se pueden hacer en cualquier momento del año – ya que estamos rodeados por el Mar de Cortez y el Océano Pacífico, siempre hay buenas olas en alguno de los diferentes puntos de la península.

Sesiones de Spa:  Para una restauración completa de cuerpo y salud no hay como una visita al spa.  En el Auriga spa de Capella Pedregal hemos lanzado recientemente un nuevo e integral programa de bienestar con tratamientos y paquetes de bienestar de 1 a 3 días basados en las fases lunares.  Uno de mis nuevos tratamientos favoritos es Harmonyum.  Gabby, mi terapista, la cual fue capacitada específicamente para este tratamiento, me explicó que nuestro cuerpo tiene la capacidad de sanar a sí mismo cuando estamos en perfecta armonía y todo comienza por la espina dorsal, la cual conecta y protege todos los nervios de nuestro cuerpo.  Me explicó que el método Harmonyum, el cual está basado en curar por medio de la energía, trabaja en la espina dorsal y los órganos principalmente.  Transmite estímulos positivos al cuerpo a través del sistema nervioso.  La experiencia es extremadamente relajante, y puedes sentir los beneficios en tu cuerpo por mucho tiempo.  Te sentirás energetizado física, mental y emocionalmente.

Auriga Detox Day At Capella Singapore

Detox Tips

With the Christmas season behind us, here in Singapore, the festive feasting continues with the Lunar New Year just around the corner.  During this time, Detox is the buzz of the town.

I had the wonderful opportunity to try out the Auriga spa Detox Day treatment which was something specially designed by Auriga spa to compliment The Organic Pharmacy’s 10-Day Detox Programme, a special kit that comes complete with tailored menus, recipes and activities to guide you through a 10-Day Detox ritual.

Detox Tips

While I was looking through The Organic Pharmacy’s 10-Day Detox Programme, I was thrilled to find a series of simple Detox tips to an effective detoxification process.  Here are a few of my favourite:

  • On waking each morning, drink glass of hot water with half a lemon squeezed in it.  The lemon provides nutrients to your body, which is quickly absorbed because there is no food yet in the body.  This practice also helps to break down the mucus in the body and alkalises the tissue.  Not to mention, the tangy zest from the lemon is a sure wake-me-up.
  • Ten minutes of breathing exercises, followed by another ten minutes of stretching is great for clearing and calming the mind as well as to get the blood circulating.  If you do not have much time, reduce the time to five minutes for each.  I felt so refreshed and rejuvenated after taking time off from my busy schedule to do this.  Stress is one of the biggest causes of the buildup of toxins in the body so this is the perfect preventive measure.
  • Before taking a shower, gently dry brush the skin to improve blood circulation and remove impurities on the skin.  I particularly love the soothing feeling of the dry bristles exfoliating the skin.
  • Shower and massage the body with body oils containing rosemary and grapefruit essential oils.  Besides its antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, Rosemary has been known to boost the immune and circulatory system.  Meanwhile, grapefruit oil is not only a lymphatic stimulant, but also has anti-depressant properties- sure to keep you feeling positive.

Overcoming Stress in The New Year

Did you write down your New Year’s resolutions?  What is on top of your list?   While I did write the entire list of resolutions, there is one thing that is most important for me this year – health and well being.  I already pay attention to the food I eat and cook, make sure to spend enough time in the nature, and workout regularly (my pilates lessons 3-times a week are one of the achieved resolutions from 2013!), this year I want to focus on living a stress-free lifestyle.

In these fast-paced times it is very hard to avoid stress.  And to so some point, I know that stress is necessary for life.  We need it for creativity, learning, survival.  Capella Ixtapa’s El Capricho Spa Director, Skarlette Castro, explains “stress only becomes harmful when it becomes overwhelming and interrupts the healthy state of equilibrium that our nervous system needs to remain in balance.”

 stress free“To many, relaxation means unwinding in front of the TV at the end of a busy day.  While you do in fact get some rest, this does little to reduce the damaging effects of stress.  To effectively combat stress, we need to activate the body’s natural relaxation system,” says Skarlette.  And this can be done in several ways:

–  Practice relaxation techniques as deep breathing or meditation.

–  Attend Yoga or Tai Chi classes.

–  Take daily walks with your dog.

–  Enjoy a relaxing evening reading books from your favorite authors.

–  Schedule regular relax and recharge time for yourself at a spa.   Skarlette suggests “El Capricho’s Rain Drops Therapy, whose main focus is relieving your back pain and providing relaxation to your body and soul, with the use of essential oils and special massage techniques.”

Comienza El Año Nuevo Libre De Estrés

¿Has definido tus resoluciones de Año Nuevo?  ¿Cuál es la prioridad en tu lista?  Mientras que yo definía mis resoluciones, hay una que sin duda es muy importante para mí este año: salud y bienestar.  Ya desde hace algún tiempo pongo atención a lo que como y cocino, asegurarme de pasar suficiente tiempo en contacto con la naturaleza, y hacer ejercicio regularmente (mis lecciones de pilates 3 veces a la semana son una de mis resoluciones del 2013 cumplidas!), este año me quiero enfocar en tener un estilo de vida libre de estrés.

En estos tiempos donde todo es mucho más dinámico, es difícil evitar el estrés.  Y hasta cierto punto, se bien que un poco de estrés es necesario en esta vida.  Lo necesitamos para detonar la creatividad, el aprendizaje, incluso la supervivencia.  Nuestra directora del Spa El Capricho en Capella Ixtapa, Skarlette Castro, me explica “el estrés se vuelve dañino cuando se vuelve tan grande que interrumpe el estado de equilibrio que nuestro sistema nervioso necesita para permanecer en balance.”

 stress free“Para muchos, relajarse significa tumbarse frente a la televisión al final de un día agitado.  Aunque puedas descansar un poco, esto hace poco por reducir los efectos dañinos del estrés.  Para combatir el estrés de forma efectiva, necesitamos activar el sistema de relajación natural de nuestro cuerpo,” me comenta Skarlette.  “Y esto se puede conseguir de diversas formas:

– Practicar técnicas de relajación como respiraciones profundas o meditación.

– Tomar clases de Yoga o Tai Chi.

– Caminar diariamente con tu mascota.

– Disfrutar de una relajante tarde leyendo libros o textos de tus autores favoritos.

– Agendar regularmente tratamientos de relajación y recarga en un spa.  Skarlette sugiere la Terapia de Gotas de Lluvia del El Capricho, “el cual se enfoca primordialmente en sanar el dolor de espalda y relajar tu cuerpo y alma, con el uso de aceites y esencias así como técnicas de masaje especiales.”

4 Tips to a Healthier 2014 From Your Capella DC Insider

The New Year means new resolutions, and of course some of the most popular resolutions are wellness related.  Jumping on that bandwagon, I decided to take a look around Georgetown and Capella Washington, D.C. to find some fun ways to incorporate health into every day life in 2014.  There is so much to do here and coming up with some ideas was easy!  Here are my 4 tips to a healthier 2014:

1.  Warm Water Therapy
Studies have shown that warm water treatment lowers blood pressure, relieves fatigue, repairs tissue faster, and relieves pain.  I couldn’t agree more and fortunately for me, the heated rooftop pool here at Capella Washington, D.C., Georgetown is just a few steps away!  I can’t think of anything more relaxing than warmth, water movement and buoyancy of the infinity pool.  Sounds simple, but I can assure you that after this therapeutic activity your body will feel incredible.  Not to mention, you won’t need to worry about distractions since the rooftop is exclusive to guests only.

2.  Fruit & Vegetable Juicing
Juicing is a fun & easy way to shower your body with concentrated amounts of nutrient-packed vegetables and fruits, minerals, and antioxidants.  The Grill Room’s Juice Bar offers an assortment of fresh squeezed juices, which are my great when I am feeling rundown.  One of my absolute favorites is the green apple, lemon, and spinach.  Here’s the recipe for you to try at home:

Ingredients:
2 Green Apples
Half a Lemon
Handful of Spinach

Directions: Use your juicer to extract the juices from each ingredient.  Stir together and enjoy.  Try to make sure your ingredients are cold before juicing to ensure an extra delicious cold, crisp flavor.

3.  Pilates
Of course one of the keys to getting healthy is getting active.  Pilates is a great workout that can be tailored to most fitness levels and does a great job of addressing your whole body.  Here at Capella Washington, D.C., Georgetown, we’ve joined forces with Fuse Pilates to redefine how travelers exercise while on the road.  Guests at the hotel can choose to workout with a dedicated instructor in the privacy of their room or they can head to the rooftop for morning sunrise Pilates classes.

4.  Get Outside
There is nothing better than combining fresh air with physical activity.  And here is Georgetown, the C&O Canal is the perfect backdrop.  Best part?  It is located just outside Capella’s doors!  There is so much to experience on the canal including hiking, biking, jogging, riding horses, and observing wildlife while building a healthy balance of the mind, body and spirit.
