A Grand Proposal

Blumendeko_009

Working at Breidenbacher Hof, A Capella Hotel, I am always receiving requests from guests looking to plan special events.  These are always such a fantastic occasions, because helping to create unique experiences is so much of what Capella Hotels and Resorts is about.

Recently, a gentleman looking to plan a marriage proposal contacted me.  In the following weeks, the gentleman, the Personal Assistants and I worked to prepare the surprise.

We arranged for an upgrade to one of our elegant Deluxe Rooms and converted it into a romantic hideaway with a huge heart made out of red roses, candles, music, champagne and truffles.

The girlfriend worked for the newspaper and was interested in writing a piece on the hotel.  So, it was my job to set up an interview with her on the big day.  I was so excited when she arrived!  I didn’t want to give away the big secret, so we sat down and conducted the interview.  Meanwhile, Personal Assistant Susanne organized for the boyfriend to arrive.

The boyfriend walked into our meeting, completely catching the girlfriend off guard.  She was very confused and asked him to wait as she was working.  Not knowing how to respond, the boyfriend sat down on a couch to wait.

It took some convincing, but finally she agreed to go with her boyfriend, who explained that he needed to talk to her.  He led her to the room, where he planned to propose.

Susanne and I waited anxiously for news!  We had spent so much time planning this major event that we felt very invested.  Would they like the room?  And more importantly, would she say yes?  We sat there with our fingers crossed.  The news finally came:  She said yes!

All the work had been worth it.  The setting was perfect and a beautiful memory had been created for the couple.  I felt honored to play a role in this couple’s real life love story.  Breidenbacher Hof will always hold a special place in this couple’s hearts and minds.  And I too will never forget them.

Andreas Gursky On Display

Gursky

Perhaps you have gathered from my previous posts or during your own experiences in Düsseldorf, but this city is rich in culture.  From the theatres to the museums, there is always some form of art to take in.  One of my favorite museums in Düsseldorf is the Museum Kunstpalast.  You might recognize the name from my visit to the El Greco exhibition.  And now we have another showstopper in town: the Düsseldorf-based and internationally renowned photographer, Andreas Gursky!

Andreas Gursky was born in Leipzig in 1955 and studied – among other places – at the Art Academy (Kunstakademie Düsseldorf) in Düsseldorf. From 1985 to 1987 he was also master student of Bernd Becher.  Today, Gursky is considered one of the pioneers of contemporary German photography and his works are in high demand throughout the world.

Whatever your thoughts are on photography, let them go, because Andreas Gursky has turned traditional photography on its head.  Gursky’s works uses various shots, which he magically combines, revises and digitally reworks – with the aim to transform his visual experiences into a greater vision.

I liked his exhibition very much because of the variety of his subjects.  Gursky has shot everything from architecture to interiors to landscapes to crowds and much, much more.  The exhibition, which showcases 60 pieces ranging from the early 1980s through today, does not move chronologically, but but jumps from year-to-year showcasing different moods and themes constantly.

The exhibit was so impressive that I plan to make a second visit!  This way I can take a closer look at some of the pieces.

Museum Kunstpalast will host Andreas Gursky until January 13, 2012.  Hopefully you will have an opportunity to see it for yourself.  The Personal Assistants here at Breidenbacher Hof would be happy to arrange tickets for you!

English Christmas Fruit Cake

Christmas Fruit Cake

Christmas is only a month away!  Can you believe how quickly the year went by?  And now the shopping, decorating and planning for the holidays has begun.  By the way – and I think I’ve said this before – I absolutely love this time of the year!  One major reason is my passion for baking Christmas treats.

Usually, I start mid-November with the first round of cookies and cakes to get into the seasonal mood.  It is just great to have your loved ones around you on a wintery afternoon with a warm cup of tea, coffee or hot chocolate in your hands.

The ideas for my baking adventures reflect a collection of different sources: newspapers, magazines, family recipe books… it’s an endless list!  But of course, I also retrieve my inspirations from our very own Chefs here at Breidenbacher Hof.  And this Christmas season I discovered a cake which I HAD to share with you, because it is so simple, so classic and absolutely delicious.

It is an English Christmas Fruit Cake recipe of our Pastry Chef Marc Witzsche and is perfect for the holidays.

English Christmas Fruit Cake:

Ingredients:

250g Raisins
250 Currants
140g Candied lemon peel
110g Dried cranberries
125g Dried apricots
110g Dried cherries
250g Butter
200g Sugar
2 Tbsp Honey
4 Eggs
250g Flour
1 Tbsp baking powder
1 tsp gingerbread spice mix
60ml rum

Directions:
-  Soak the fruits in rum. Place the butter, sugar and honey in a bowl and whip them until a foamy texture is achieved.
-  Beat in the eggs one by one.  Then blend in the fruits carefully.
-  Add the remaining ingredients and stir until the dough is smooth.
-  Place it in a greased baking dish and bake it for about 45 minutes at 180°C.

I hope you enjoy it!

Cirque du Soleil inspires Düsseldorf

Cirque du Soleil : The Dead Clown

Did you enjoy going to the circus when you were a child?

I was always amazed by the shows and even today I am fascinated by the world of acrobats and actors, clowns and artists.

After all, who does not like to escape the daily life and be enchanted by a show offering performances like the Cirque du Soleil?  The Canadian attraction is staying in Düsseldorf until November 18, 2012 showing their visionary program, Corteo.

Cirque du Soleil does an amazing job of weaving the acts into a true story.  Corteo means parade and tells the story of a clown sharing his joyful fantasies of a magic world between heaven and earth. In total, 62 artists from 20 different countries are involved in this spectacle!

Due to its great popularity the show has already been presented in more than 40 cities.  I was fortunate enough to have already seen it and I can agree with all of the positive feedback: beautiful costumes in all imaginable colors, breathtaking acrobatic acts and cheerful clowns.  For me it was like traveling back in time to my childhood.  And I am not alone!  Throughout the city everyone is talking about the breathtaking experience.

I just can’t say enough of about this circus!  It is truly an experience I will cherish.  If you have the chance to see Cirque du Soleil in Düsseldorf do not miss out!  Your Breidenbacher Hof Personal Assistant will happily help you plan your evening.  But even If you are unable to catch it during your visit, by all means, make sure to see it along one of its other stops.

The Natsu Cocktail at Breidenbacher Hof

Natsu Cocktail at Breidenbacher Hof

As I’ve mentioned, Düsseldorf is home to a large Japanese population.  Actually, with about 8000 people it is one of the largest Japanese communities outside Japan!  The influence is seen in the Japanese Garden, annual festivals and schools.

And of course, such a strong cultural presence also impacts the city’s cuisine.  I am not just talking about all the small and fine Japanese restaurants we have in town. But here at Breidenbacher Hof our Capella Bar team is also swayed by the Japanese influence.  Recently they took part in a nationwide bartender project called “7 Samurai Bar Chefs,” a collaboration of seven bartenders spread all over Germany and even Switzerland who created exciting cocktails made of traditional Japanese ingredients, sake and sochu.

I was very curious about the use of these ingredients and asked the team if I could give the cocktails a try.  Having only had hot sake, I was curious as to how it would translate to a cocktail.  My verdict: fantastic!  My favorite is definitely the Natsu Cocktail.  As always, I love to share my favorite recipes with you and this is no exception!

Natsu Cocktail

Ingredients:
2 pineapple slices
Grapefruit zest
4cl Yuzu sake liqueur
2cl Yuzu juice
1 dash chili vodka
1cl sugar syrup
Sparkling sake
Crushed ice

Garnish:
mint leaves
grapefruit zest

Directions:
Cut the pineapple slices into pieces and put them in a glass together with the grapefruit zest.  Muddle them slightly using a mortar or a spoon.  Then add the liqueur, juice, vodka and syrup.  Add crushed ice to the top of the glass and then the sparkling sake until the glass is filled. Garnish the glass with some mint leaves and grapefruit zest.

Let me know what you think!  Could the Natsu Cocktail become one of your favorites?

Afternoon Tea at Breidenbacher Hof

Lobby_Lounge_Tea_Detail_2

Now that Autumn has arrived and temperatures are cooling down, I am really getting into the mood for a cup of hot tea, cakes and cookies. It is simply the time of the year where I like to relax inside, not only by myself, but also with good friends. And to be honest, is there anything cozier than an Afternoon Tea session (especially afternoon tea at Breidenbacher Hof!) in a comfortable environment? I don’t think so!

As I am regularly in charge of organizing get-togethers among my friends, I thought it would be nice to meet at Breidenbacher Hof for tea. I have never had Afternoon Tea at our property before and was just as excited as my friends to experience the service and enjoy our time together.

Afternoon tea at Breidenbacher Hof is served in our Lobby Lounge space.  It is the ideal setting because it is both warm and inviting.  Perfect for lounging, talking, and of course, enjoying tea!

Speaking of, service begins with the tea selection.  I was quite impressed by the enormous selection of different blends – in total there are about 24 different Ronnefeldt teas.  If you find yourself overwhelmed, don’t worry! A box with a small sample of each variety is provided for you to smell.  After choosing our teas, we each received our very own teapot with a little hot plate to keep it warm.

Next a display of tea sandwiches, cakes and scones was placed on our table.  What a treat!  It was wonderful to snack on the finger food as we shared stories and chatted the afternoon away.   In fact, the afternoon was such a hit, that we decided to repeat our little gathering during Christmas season when all holiday treats are available!
