Experience Capital Bikeshare DC

Capital Bikeshare DC

One of my favorite new activities in Georgetown is bike riding!  Capital Bikeshare has over 200 bike stations across DC, Arlington, Alexandria, VA and Montgomery County, MD, making it easier than ever to get around the city.  My first bike ride came about after an extremely long day at work, I had to find a way to let loose!  I walked around the corner of Capella Washington D.C. and rented a shiny red bike at $7.00 for 24 hours.  Afterwards, I realized I could have rented a bike for 3 days for just $15.00!  I headed down the hill to the Washington Harbour and Potomac River.  The fall weather was perfect, and all around me were beautiful sites of joyful couples, friends relaxing in the lush green grass, children walking their dogs, and young professionals enjoying cocktails and dinner by the water.

Capital Bikeshare DCMy bike ride continued back up into the heart of Georgetown.  I remembered I wanted to check out a new designer consignment shop on Wisconsin Avenue.  0.2 miles later I arrived at Ella-Rue and picked up a gorgeous bracelet on sale for $18.00!  Back on the road, I biked passed more fashionable haunts including Hu’s Wear, Cusp and Hugo Boss.  I also discovered some great new restaurants, like the brand new El Centro by Chef Richard Sandoval, featuring some of the best Mexican comfort food and Tequila in the city.

After journeying around M street and Wisconsin shopping and dining district I felt the need for speed.  I took a right onto Rock Creek Park Trail, one of the best places to hike and bike in the Washington, DC area.  It was so refreshing having the opportunity to explore the beauty of nature and escape the city life for a while.  The bike by the way was amazing and I was pleasantly surprised how well it is designed, with many built-in safety mechanisms.

Fortunately there happens to be a bikeshare station right next to my house, so after I returned from the trail, I simply parked the bike at the station and walked my way home.  The next morning I still had time left on the 24 hour rental, so I decided to bike to work!  I have to say it was a wonderful way to start the busy day.

I can’t wait for you to experience Capital Bikeshare during your visit it is an amazing way to experience the city.  Be sure to ask your Capella Washington, D.C. Personal Assistant where the nearest station is located!

Fall Comes To The Grill Room At Capella Washington D.C.

Fall at the Grill Room

September is a bittersweet month.  It’s not easy saying farewell to gorgeous summer days, weekends by the Potomac River, and classic summertime dishes and cocktails in Georgetown.  But as the autumn leaves arrive and the seasons begin to change so do my taste buds and I begin to crave the richer warmer dishes and cocktails that warm the soul.  Fortunately my timing is impeccable as Capella Washington D.C.’s Chef Jakob has begun to create the fall menu for The Grill Room.

Fall at the Grill Room

The fall menu launch will take place on Wednesday, September 25th, but as your Capella Insider I’ve gotten a sneak peek.  Chef Jakob shared with me that he loves root vegetables and slow-braised dishes with rich flavor, just like he grew up on year-round in northern Sweden.   Each dish will incorporate these fall ingredients with the continuation of grilled meats and fish on the bone.  One dish I’m most eager to taste is the grilled Turbot served alongside a fried oyster!

Speaking of oysters, The Grill Room will be incorporating a local microbrew called, Port City Porter for his Autumn Braised Calf and Oyster dish.   The addition of this local brew will incorporate rich flavors of bittersweet coffee, dark chocolate, and a very complex malt character enhanced by yeast fruitiness.

Even better, The Grill Room will continue partnering with Stachowski’s Market, utilizing their homemade fall inspired ingredients.  Get ready for blood pudding spiced with Spanish Pepper, made with pig and beef blood.  Enjoyed with a tender suckling pig, Chef Jakob promises an absolutely delicious dish.

Follow me on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook for even more teasers about the new fall menu!

In addition to the new fall menu, Chef Jakob is teaming up with two Michelin Star Chef’s, Chef Hans Borén & Chef Johan Björkman on October 22nd at The Grill Room.  Together, these chefs will be offering the public two lunches and two dinners, using locally sourced ingredients to bring Scandinavian cuisine to DC!  Stay tuned with me to find out all the details and ticket information for this event.  You can also contact The Grill Room at 202-617-2424 or e-mail thegrillroom.dc@capellahotels.com for more details.

A Georgetown Staycation

Staycation in Georgetown

Living in Washington, D.C. has been one of the best experiences of my life.  I moved to Foggy Bottom, a short walk from Georgetown, back in June and I couldn’t be happier!  I love that Washington, D.C. is full of entertainment and activities suitable for everyone.  When I learned that Capella Washington D.C., Georgetown was featuring a Georgetown Staycation Package with tickets to The International Spy Museum, I knew this was an educational experience I had to try out for myself.  My friend and I checked into the hotel on Friday and enjoyed dinner in The Grill Room.  Then Saturday our adventure began.

We met Angel, our Capella Personal Assistant, in the main lobby entrance, where she had all our Spy Museum tour tickets and information ready to go!  Angel had also arranged for a taxi to take us from the hotel to the International Spy Museum, a short 2.5 miles away from Capella.

Staycation in GeorgetownThe tour itself was incredible!  We learned how espionage helped in the American Revolutionary War, Civil War, WWI and WWII and other American conflicts.  My favorite part of the tour was the comprehensive exhibit of all the James Bond movies.  There was definitely something for everyone — from the history buff to the film fanatic.  After taking peek at all the museum had to offer, we hit up the gift shop and made our way outside where our taxi was waiting (Angel had planned ahead!).

Once we got back to the hotel we headed over to Key Bridge Boathouse.  Fortunately it was the perfect day for a picnic (prepared by the hotel), and we sat under the colorful umbrellas and watched the boats, kayaks, canoes and paddle boarders set sail on the Potomac River.  I would have to say it was a perfect Saturday for getting to know Georgetown just a little better.

Staycation In GeorgetownThe Spy Museum and Key Bridge Boathouse are just two activities you can partake in while visiting Georgetown.  Be sure to ask your Capella Personal Assistant for additional ideas!

The Grill Room: A Transformation

The Grill Room

I will never forget the preopening phase of Capella Washington, D.C., Georgetown and all the incredible work that was put in to creating this magnificent property.  Being a food and restaurant lover, I was also interested in the creation of The Grill Room and how exactly the designers would transform an empty space into an ultra-luxury restaurant.  I began to take short videos of the construction back in December. Each week I would take another video in the same place and throughout the different spaces so I would be able to create a time lapse when The Grill Room was complete.  Never could I have imagined that the space would turn out as spectacularly as it has!

The Grill Room

It is great to now see The Grill Room (and The Rye Bar) bustling with action from locals and visitors alike.  Executive Chef, Jakob Esko and his skilled culinary team are spinning out local contemporary American dishes and specializing in, bone-in meats and side table preparations that have to be experienced.  I can’t wait for you to have a taste for yourself!

But in the meantime take a look at what went into creating this signature space:

Celebrate 4th of July With Capella Washington DC

4th of July at Capella Washington DC

As a new resident of Washington, D.C. there is one holiday that I cannot wait to celebrate, and that is the 4th of July.   The history and excitement surrounding this day is unbelievable and unlike any other city in the country.  As the 4th approaches, I cannot wait to see the city’s culture come alive to honor the past and continue to strive for tomorrow.  For those who live in the city, I’m sure you know the contagious aura of excitement leading up to and during the celebration of Independence Day.  This has only increased with the addition of Capella Washington D.C., Georgetown as one of the city’s premiere destinations.

Ever since I first discovered that the hotel would feature an exclusive rooftop bar, lounge and infinity pool, my first thought was “I can’t wait for fireworks on 4th of July”!  The hotel local in the heart of Georgetown is exceptional and it’s no surprise to me that Mr. Horst Schulze, CEO of Capella Hotels & Resorts, chose Washington D.C. as the flagship American home for the next chapter of our brand.  The rooftop perfectly captures the spirit of the city, and will be the place to watch the firework show with the company of great friends, family and loved ones.

The rooftop, unlike The Grill Room and The Rye Bar (which have already become favorite local hangouts) is exclusive to hotel guests.  Consequently it has remained a bit of a mystery.  So I thought I would take this opportunity to paint a picture of what it is like.

4th of July at Capella Washington DCFrom the moment I step off the elevator it is almost as though I am on top of the world!  All around are unobstructed views of some of the city’s most iconic landmarks.  From the Washington Monument to the Kennedy Center to the Potomac, nothing else quite captures the breadth of the city like this view.  The rooftop offers an array of unique accommodations.  For those craving a bit of liveliness, the bar and lounge area are a great place for spending time in a group.  Meanwhile there are more intimate seating options as well if you are looking for a more private moment.  For me, there is nothing like the infinity pool.  I love to relax in the water while taking in the city below.  The rooftop is truly a versatile space!

4th of July Capella Washington DC 2 In order to give locals and visitors alike a chance to experience this unique venue, Capella Washington, D.C., Georgetown is offering a one-night package for the 4th of July that includes dinner, entertainment and of course the perfect setting for celebrating our nation’s Independence.  Hopefully I will see you there!  You can contact the Capella Washington, D.C. reservation team at (202)617-2410 for additional information or you can book online HERE.
