The Beautiful Beaches Of Ixtapa

Capella Ixtapa guests and visitors often ask for recommendations for local beaches— a very challenging question, as we are lucky to have plenty of beautiful beaches of Ixtapa – Zihuatanejo!  In fact there are so many beaches in the area that I had to split this post in two.  Here I will focus on Ixtapa’s beaches and next time on Zihuatanejo’s.  Each beach has its own character and is great for partaking in different water sports.  I am sure you will find one that is just right for you!

Ixtapa Beaches

IXTAPA BEACHES

Playa Linda (or Beautiful Beach)
Playa Linda is located just North of Ixtapa – and very close to Capella Ixtapa -  and is more than 1 km (0.65 miles) long.  It is a popular beach for water sports, our annual surfing tournament happens here, and here you can embark on a panga and visit the Ixtapa Island.  I am fond of the natural mangrove lagoon.  There is a lookout point there where you can get a great view of alligators!

Playa El Palmar (or The Palm Trees Beach)
Playa El Palmar is Ixtapa’s principal beach, located at the main hotel strip, in “Zone I”.  It is 2.5 km (1.6 miles) long, with a slew of water sports available including parasailing!  It is one of my favorite places to watch the spectacular sunsets.  This beach has been certified as “Clean Beach” by IMNC.

Playa Las Escolleras
This is one of the most popular surfing spots in the area, you can access it at Playa El Palmar, by the rocks dividing the marina from the beach.  This beach is particularly popular with Capella Ixtapa as many of us (including our sommelier!) enjoy catching these waves.

Playa Quieta (or Calm Beach)
This lovely and quiet beach is 350 m (0.21 miles) long.  Located in front of Ixtapa Island, it is the ideal spot for swimming and wind surfing.  I also really love to go kayaking here.

IXTAPA ISLAND (or ISLA GRANDE)
Ixtapa Island is a beautiful island accessible by a water-taxi from the pier at Playa Linda.  It is one of favorite beaches of our General Manager, Eliezer Quiñones.  I love to go there for snorkeling and diving.

Playa Varadero (the Docking Beach) on Ixtapa Island
Playa Varadero is the arrival point when you land on the island from Playa Linda.  There are restaurants and water sports operators available. It’s a great place to catch a bite and watch the boats come in.

Playa Cuachalalate on the Ixtapa Island
This beach also offers seafood restaurants and water sports rentals.  It is named after a tree that was very abundant in this part of the island.  The bark of this tree is used even today for medical purposes for circulatory disorders, mouth ulcers, infections, and others.

Playa Coral (or Coral Reef Beach) on the Ixtapa Island
Hands down, this is one of the best beaches for snorkeling and diving!  Because of its beautiful flora and fauna, all visitors are asked not to walk on the coral reef, pull out plants, or catch sea life there.  You will be able to notice that the sand here is completely different from other beaches in the island.

Las Hermosas Playas De Ixtapa

Nuestros huéspedes y visitantes de Capella Ixtapa a menudo nos preguntan sobre nuestras playas locales favoritas -una pregunta muy difícil de contestar, ya que tenemos suerte de contar ¡con muchas playas hermosas en Ixtapa – Zihuatanejo! De hecho hay tantas playas que recomendar que hemos dividido este articulo en dos partes. En esta ocasión nos enfocaremos a Ixtapa, y en el próximo post revisaremos las playas de Zihuatanejo. Cada playa tiene su propio carácter y cada una es ideal para ciertos deportes acuáticos. Estoy segura que encontrarán una perfecta para ustedes.

Ixtapa Beaches

PLAYAS DE IXTAPA 

Playa Linda
Playa Linda está ubicada en la parte norte de Ixtapa -y muy cerca de Capella Ixtapa- y tiene más de 1 km de larga. Es una playa muy popular para practicar deportes acuáticos, nuestro torneo anual de surf sucede aquí, y es aquí también donde puedes subirte a una panga para visitar la Isla Ixtapa. En lo personal me encanta el manglar de la laguna. Incluso hay un mirador desde donde puedes observar los cocodrilos.

Playa El Palmar
Esta es la playa principal de Ixtapa, localizada en el corredor principal hotelero (o Zona 1). Con una longitud de 2.5 km y un menú de actividades acuáticas done está incluida el parasailing! Esta playa es uno de mis sitios favoritos para disfrutar de puestas del sol espectaculares. Cabe recordar que la playa está certificada como “Playa Limpia” por el IMNC.

Playa Las Escolleras
Esta es la playa más popular en la zona para practicar el surf, se puede acceder a ella desde Playa El Palmar, a través de las rocas que dividen la marina de la playa. Esta playa es particularmente popular en Capella Ixtapa, ya que muchos de nosotros (incluido nuestro sommelier) disfrutamos deslizándonos por esas olas.

Playa Quieta
Esta encantadora y tranquila playa tiene 350 metros de longitud. Ubicada frente a la Isla de Ixtapa, es el lugar ideal para nadar y practicar un poco de windsurf. A mi en lo personal me encanta también hacer kayak en esta playa.

Isla Ixtapa
La Isla Ixtapa es una hermosa isla accesible solamente por medio de taxi acuático que puedes tomar en Playa Linda. Es también una de las playas favoritas de nuestro Gerente General Eliezer Quiñones. A mi me encanta hacer snorkeling y buceo ahí.

Playa Varadero en Isla Ixtapa
Esta playa es el punto de llegada a Isla Ixtapa. Hay restaurantes y operadores de deportes acuáticos. Es un gran lugar para comer algo y admirar el ir y venir de los botes desde la comodidad de la playa.

Playa Cuachalalate en Isla Ixtapa.
Esta playa ofrece también restaurantes de pescados y mariscos así como renta de actividades acuáticas. Su nombre proviene de un tipo de árbol muy abundante en esta parte de la isla. La corteza de este árbol es utilizado aún hoy en día con fines médicos para mejorar la circulación sanguínea, úlceras bucales, infecciones y otros más.

Fácilmente, una de las mejores playas para hacer buceo y/o snorkel! Debido a su hermosa y abundante flora y fauna marina, a todo el que la visita se le pide de la manera más atenta no caminar en el arrecife, sacar plantas o pescar de cualquier manera. Notarás que la arena aquí es completamente diferente que en las otras playas de la Isla.

Coconut Cocktails At Capella Ixtapa

Coconut Cocktails

Mexico is among top producers of coconut in the world, and I am grateful Ixtapa is rich with them! The abundance of coconuts means our chefs and bar staff are always finding creative ways to incorporate them.

While I love all the amazing meals and desserts our Executive Chef Alexander Branch and Pastry Chef Marcelo Vega Rios prepare throughout the coconut season, I cannot live without refreshing coconut water. It helps keep me hydrated during hot summer days, and you can enjoy them as a refreshing cocktail as well.

Coconut Cocktails

Paloma likes to prepare coconut cocktails for our guests and her favorite is the Coco Loco. I got the recipe for those of you who share my love of coconuts and have to try it for yourself!

Coco Loco
0.5 Oz. Matusalem Rum
0.5 Oz. Absolut Vodka
0.5 Oz. Tanqueray Gin
0.5 Oz. Don Julio ReposadoTequila 1.0 Oz. Lime Juice
0.5 Oz. Simple Syrup
6 Leaves Fresh Peppermint
1 Cup Ice Cubes

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker, and shake vigorously. For a fun presentation, remove the top of a coconut and pour the Coco Loco in. Remember to serve your coconut cocktails with a straw!

Especial de Primavera en Capella Ixtapa: Cocos

México es uno de los principales productores de Coco en el mundo, y estoy agradecida de que Ixtapa tenga tantos! La abundancia de cocos hace que nuestros chefs estén siempre buscando nuevas y creativas formas de incorporarlos a nuestros platillos.

Me encantan los platillos y postres que tanto nuestro Chef Ejecutivo Alexand Branch como nuestro chef reposto Marcelo Vega Rios están preparando para esta temporada de coco, y he de decir que tampoco puedo vivir sin la refrescante agua de coco. La cual ayuda a mantenerme hidratada durante el cálido verano, y disfrutarla en deliciosos coctéles también.

Coconut Cocktails

Paloma gusta de preparar deliciosos cocteles para nuestros invitados, y su favorito es el Coco Loco. Conseguí a receta para aquellos que no pueden esperar a probarlo!

Coco Loco
0.5 Oz. Ron Matusalen
0.5 Oz. Vodka Absolut Azul
0.5 Oz. Ginebra Tanqueray
0.5 Oz. Tequila Don Julio Reposado
1.0 Oz. Jugo de limón
0.5 Oz. Jarabe dulce simple
6 Hojas frescas de hierbabuena
1 taza de hielo en cubos

Combinar los ingredientes en una coctelera, y agitar vigorosamente.
Para una presentación divertida, remueve la parte superior de un coco, y sirve el Coco Loco en el. Recuerda acompañarlo de un popote!

Atlzazilistle: The Jaguar Fight Rain Ritual

I love Mexican traditions, and if you’ve read my previous posts, we have plenty of them!  Recently I learned about an amazing tradition, unique to our state Guerrero.  It is a rain ritual and I would love to share it with you.

Atlzazilistle (or the Jaguar fight rain ritual) is a petition for rain and fertility.  The festival takes place in the village Acatlán, about 6 hours from Ixtapa.  Each year the events begins with the blessing of the seeds on April 25, and the climax of the celebrations arrives in early May with festivities organized by the hosts and community authorities.

During the festival people offer birds, flowers, food, copal and wax figures at various hills and sacred places.  One of the most interesting and picturesque rituals happens on May 2, with staged fights among various masked figures.  Early in the morning the tlacololeros (men in masks, jute suits and with whips) visit mayordomo at his home, where they offer him pozole and mezcal as an invitation to the ceremonies and a signal of the start of the ritual.

After this, the entire community gathers at the church, where the tlacololeros, the cotlatlastin (men of the wind) and tecuanis (men dressed as a jaguar) are presented.  The church music is played by teponaxtli (a slit drum made of hollow hardwood logs) and the chirimía (a wooden flute), while the church bells formally announce the start of the festivities.  At that moment tecuanis (people dressed as jaguars) gather in groups of 22 and begin to fight.  This part of the ritual aims to bring rain and good crops, as it is an ancient belief that “The more the tecuanis (jaguars) fight, the more rain falls.”

The fights continue to the next day, when participants march to the top of a sacred hill Cerro del Cruzco.  This is the climax of the offering to the earth (huentli) to bring rains and good crops.

During the festivities each of the tecuanis keeps complete anonymity.  They dress and groom alone so their opponents – who can be their friends or even family – don’t recognize them. The tecuani use a skin mask made by craftsmen of Acatlán.  They are amazingly beautiful and considered a master craft, and can sell for hundreds of US dollars.

This tradition has been passed from generation to generation, and it is believed that every stroke of a wrestler over another is a prayer for good rain and good soil.

This is quite the festival!  And I look forward to seeing the results from this year’s harvest.

Pelea De Jaguares: Un Ritual Para La Lluvia

Me encantan las tradiciones mexicanas, y como han podido leer en mis anteriores artículos, ¡tenemos muchas de ellas! Recientemente aprendí sobre una sorprendente tradición, única de nuestro estado de Guerrero, y me gustaría compartirla con ustedes.

El Atlzazilistle (o Peleas Jaguar para el ritual de la lluvia) es una petición de lluvia y fertilidad. El festival tiene lugar en el pueblo de Acatlán, a 6 horas en carretera de Ixtapa. Cada año el evento inicia con la bendición de las semillas el 25 de Abril, y el clímax de las celebraciones llega a inicio de Mayo con las fiestas organizadas por los “mayordomos” y autoridades de la comunidad.

Durante el festival la gente ofrece aves, flores, comida, copal y figuras de cera en varios cerros y lugares sagrados. Uno de los rituales más interesantes y pintorescos sucede en 2 de Mayo, con escenas de peleas entre varios personajes enmascarados. En la madrugada los “tlacololeros” (hombres ataviados en máscaras, trajes de yute y latigos) visitan al mayordomo en su casa, donde se les ofrece pozole y mezcal como bienvenida y señal de inicio de el ritual.

Después de esto, toda la comunidad se junta en la iglesia, donde los tlacololeros, los “cotlatlastin” (hombres del viento) y los “tecuanis” (hombres vestidos de jaguar) son presentados. La música en la iglesia se toca con “teponaxtli” (un tambor prehispánico hecho con troncos huecos) y la “chirimía” (flauta de madera), mientras las campanas anuncian el comienzo de las festividades. En ese momento los tecuanis se organizan en grupos de 22 y comienzan a pelear. Esta parte del ritual busca atraer lluvia y buenas cosechas, ya que como marca la antigua creencia “Mientras más pelean los tecuanis (jaguares), más lluvia cae.”

Las peleas duran hasta el siguiente día, cuando los participantes se dirigen a la cima del Cerro del Cruzco. este es el punto más alto de la ofrenda a la tierra (huentli) lo cual traerá lluvias y buenas cosechas.

Durante los festejos cada uno de los tecuanis conserva completo anonimato. Se visten y preparan en solitario, para que sus contrincantes, que pueden ser incluso sus amigos o familia, no los reconozcan. El tecuani usa una máscara de piel endurecida creada por los artesanos de Acatlán. Son sorprendentemente bellas y consideradas una artesanía muy fina, e incluso se pueden vender por miles de pesos.

Esta tradición ha pasado de generación en generación, y se cree que cada golpe de uno de los peleadores (tecuanis) a otro es una plegaria para atraer la lluvia y la tierra fértil.

¡Vaya que es una festividad! Y espero pronto ver los resultados de la cosecha de este año.
