Wellness Activities in Baja

Happy New Year!  I hope the year started wonderfully for you!  For me personally, the New Year is always a time to reflect on all the good things in my life, my achievements in the previous year, and plans to start new beginnings with fresh ideas.  I like to start off with good intentions to make positive changes in my life.  This year especially, I want to focus on wellness in all areas of my life.  In Baja there are many activities that promote wellness and I wanted to share three of my favorites with you.  I believe they are a great way to connect with nature, your body and your spirit and I plan to experience them as frequently as possible this year!

wellness activities baja

SUP Yoga:  I love SUP yoga, because it allows me to practice yoga in my favorite environment: the sea!  If you are not familiar with SUP yoga, it is yoga but done on a stand up paddle board (SUP) on the sea.  I love how it enhances the yoga experience and benefits, and really strengthens your core and balance.  You can partake SUP yoga classes at Medano beach in Cabo San Lucas (please check with your Personal Assistant on the dates, as they are organized as special events).  I also love to take an unplugged weekend in Los Barriles and attend SUP yoga classes with the locals.

Surfari Trips:  If you like safari, you need to try a Baja surfari; a surf trip around Baja, where you get to surf some of the best surf spots in Baja!  Surfaris provide a very unique opportunity to experience nature, the ocean, hidden bays and small villages—all while learning new surfing skills and spend quality time with friends or family.  I love surfaris in Baja, as you can join them any time of year – because we are surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez, there are always great surf breaks somewhere.

Spa Time:  for a complete restoration of body and health there is nothing like a visit to the spa.  At Capella Pedregal’s Auriga spa we have just launched the entirely new wellness program with wellness treatments and 1- to 3-day wellness packages based on moon phases.  One of my new favorite treatments is Harmonyum. Gabby, the therapist, who was trained exclusively on this treatment, explained that our body has the power to heal itself when we are in perfect harmony and it all starts in the spine, which connects and protects all the nerves in our body.  She explained that the Harmonyum method, which is based on curing with energy, works on the spinal column and the organs.  It transmits positive impulses to the body through the nervous system.  The experience is extremely relaxing, and you can feel the benefits throughout your body for days.  You will feel energized physically, mental and emotionally.

Recap: Capella Pedregal’s 2nd Annual Food and Wine Festival

Capella Pedregal Food and Wine Festival 1

While I am writing this post, exactly two days have passed since our 2nd Annual Food and Wine Festival at Capella Pedregal has concluded.  The event lasted from July 10-13, and I am still in awe of all of the fantastic events, exciting activities, amazing dishes, delicious wines, tasty cocktails and interesting spirits, that I don’t even know where to begin! Capella Pedregal Food and Wine Festival 1Four guest chefs, Kent Rathbun, Dean Fearing, Tim Hollingsworth and Philippe Schmit, along with Capella Pedregal’s Executive Chef Yvan Mucharraz, Pastry Chef Lauren Sung Wong Tee and the entire culinary team, created an unforgettable feast.  140 guests enjoyed a cheese and wine opening event at El Farallon restaurant, country themed beach BBQ party at the Beach Club and pool area, and a truly fantastic gala dinner, which we hosted at our fine dining restaurant, Don Manuel’s.

Capella Pedregal Food and Wine Festival 2Participants attended our Chefs’ cooking demonstrations, where they were able to learn tips and tricks from the best.  We made a Porcini Mushroom-Truffle Risotto (Chef Kent Rathbun); Seared Blue Fin Tuna Tataki with Salmorejo (Chef Yvan Mucharraz), Barbecue Shrimp Taco with Mango Pickled Red Onion Salad (Chef Dean Fearing), Gnocchi Parisian Style (Chef Philippe Schmit) and Shrimp Aguachile with Avocado and Citrus (Chef Tim Hollingsworth).

Capella Pedregal Food and Wine Festival 3Wine tastings included varietals from Duckhorn Vineyards and Vinos Mariatinto.  And tequila tastings featuring varieties from Jose Cuervo taught us everything we always wanted to know about tequila, and more!  For example: did you know that the proper way to drink tequila is to sip it, and not have it as a shot?  Or that añejo tequila has more than 160 aromas, including caramel, vanilla, smoke, fruits and chocolate—just to name a few!

FWF-Cabo-Cheese-Wine2Capella Pedregal Food and Wine Festival 4Our Gala Dinner concluded with a great party and live music by Capella All Stars Band, and fantastic fireworks!

Pictures say more than words, so I’ve included several here, but I invite you to see our Food & Wine photo galleries on our Facebook Page.  The event was fully booked, I recommend you save your seats for the Capella Pedregal Food and Wine Festival 2014 as soon as possible.  We have already announced the dates: July 9-13, 2014!  For more information, please email us at Shirley.DHanks@capellahotels.com.

The Capella Pedregal Kids Club

Capella Kids

Often I am asked about activities for our younger guests here at Capella Pedregal.  In addition to nanny services, which are offered on an hourly basis, the Capella Pedregal Kids Club provides half-day, full day, evening and week-long programs.  I often visit them while they are making sand castles on the beach or banana splits in the kitchen and I can never tell who is having more fun – the kids or Capella Pedregal’s new Kids Club Coordinator, Elideth Loaiza.

Eli, as she is affectionately known, is beloved by both our young guests and their parents.  She has a youthful spirit and is always full of ideas for fun games and activities.

Capella Pedregal Kids ClubShe always has a new activity for the kids.  From building kites to fly on the beach, to treasure hunting or cooking classes, Eli is always dreaming up something new!  I asked Eli what the most popular activity was and she shared the details of movie night.  “Everyone gathers outside under the Palapa.  There we set up a screen to show movies on, while the kids enjoy popcorn, pizza, and other treats made especially for us!”

Besides the regular Kids Club program, Eli organizes special activities for holidays and other important dates.  If you are planning your vacations at Capella Pedregal and thinking whether to bring your children along, I can’t recommend Eli and our Kids Club highly enough.  The Capella Pedregal Kids Club is open Monday to Saturday for kids ages 4 through 12.  For more information or additional questions please contact our Kids Club at kids.club@capellahotels.com.
