If the name Robert Kamen doesn’t sound familiar, I am certain you have seen his work. Mr. Kamen is the renowned screenwriter behind movies like Karate Kid, Fifth Element, The Transporter, and A Walk in the Clouds.
Mr. Kamen’s recent visit to Capella Pedregal wasn’t due to his future movie plans, but due to his other passion in life – winemaking. Ernesto Mendoza, our sommelier, invited me to a tasting of Kamen Estate Wines and for a chat with Mr. Kamen himself.
The winery was established in 1980, with the acquisition of 280 acres in the Southern Mayacamas Mountains in Sonoma County. Mr. Kamen planned to plant the highest quality Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. The land was rugged, overgrown, extremely rocky and very remote. But this did not deter Mr. Kamen, who had committed himself to organic farming. Even today the soils at Kamen Estate Wines have never been exposed to chemical fertilizer, pesticides or herbicides.
After a devastating fire in 1996 (which also appears in his film A Walk In The Clouds) that destroyed one third of the vines along with his home, Mr. Kamen became even more committed to his vineyard and creating a premiere wine for the public. In 1999 he released his first wine to the market. Today, Kamen Estate Wines can be found in select wine shops and fine dining restaurants in both the States and Mexico. It has been recognized in The Wine Advocate by Robert Parker who says, “Kamen [Estate Wines] is now producing one of the top cabernets in Sonoma.”
Needless to say, I am excited that our fine dining restaurant, Don Manuel’s, is the first restaurant in Baja California Sur to offer Kamen Estate Wines.
